Who here hosts friends, family, and/or loved ones for the holidays? Even outside of the holiday season, we all make meals with kitchen must-have appliances and such. For the past few years we typically have hosted Thanksgiving or Christmas at our house, sometimes both. It’s usually an intimate setting of Charlie, me, my brother and sister-in-law, my nephew, and my parents – sometimes my sister-in-law’s parents as well. Growing up we spent the holidays with my mom’s large family, but as years have gone by we’ve largely stepped away from most of them because boundaries are important. It’s a hard thing to do with family, particularly around the holidays, but toxic people have no business in your life and disturbing your precious inner peace. Over time that has become less difficult and more of a prayer that I’ve only allowed loved ones who share mutual respect and love.
Now – back to cooking. What do you like to make for the holidays? Are you a turkey person, ham, roast, or something entirely different? I love hearing what people look forward to sharing during a holiday meal. I always laugh at the memes that rate holiday side dishes and what people absolutely detest. Personally, I’m not a green bean casserole person. We make a fresh green bean dish sauteed with pine nuts, bacon, and Roquefort cheese. I’m also a fresh cranberry dish person, but Charlie loves the canned cranberry jelly that’s impossible to slice because it’s permanently shaped with ridges. LOL. We also never had macaroni as a side dish but I’ve come to know many families do. I wouldn’t be opposed, I love mac n’ cheese. I make a candied sweet potato ‘casserole’ type dish that is an absolute dream. What are your favorite side dishes?
Some of my favorite tools and utensils are new, some I’ve had for years. I used to bake/make most dishes in glass pans or bowls. Now we’ve gone to large disposable aluminum pans and I’m hugely disappointed I didn’t do that sooner. The clean-up is SO MUCH EASIER! I do, however, prefer nice dishes and place settings. It makes the table look so nice and our gathering is rather small. Here is last year’s cranberry dish recipe.
